Interesting. I was watching this guy the other day and he was experimenting about toroidal propellers. He put out a challenge for people to create different designs and he would print and test them.

Of course printing and testing a bunch of random designs is a HUGE task. My thought was to add vortex generators like you see on the back of boy racer cars. I'm sure this WRX gets another 25 HP for it.

Given that I don't know poop about aerodynamics, it's purely a guess. But in my mind the vortex generator will allow the water to detach from the prop and make it more efficient. Which might be what's happening with the prop above?

Of course the is a bunch of fancy math and software involved that could model that and get the perfect design.
