Not saying to throw in the towel on your motor, but have you considered trying a Hobbystar 1730? They are priced rather cheap with good specs and end bell is already tapped for 3 and 4m.
I will give one a shot for sure. Thanks for suggesting that. It will be a couple of weeks before I can order one.

I talk to a group of 1/5 scale people. They swear by the Hobbystar stuff.

Before I had the 1480kv on my Kraton....I hade a 1730kv Leopard or so. Lots of people were having great success. Mine was sizzling quick after a few mins. I swapped in the 1480, had perfect temps and very long run times. I never did figure out what was going on previously. It's high resistance some place is all I can say. That could be tires, gears and weight also causing the high amps. At this point... the motor is looking suspicious. Like Rich said...see if you can find out why but don't throw in the towel. Very frustrating Park. You got gremlins for sure.
Never throw in the towl. I have the truck dialed and love it..... super excited to to get electronics sorted which will happen. Replaced everything but the motor.
It has been interesting because most my experience has been with 1/10 2s cars. A few 4s race buggies and truggies, but these high power rigs are a whole new learning experience! You don't have bad solder and connector issues with lower voltage rigs!
Actually learning a lot.
Value you dudes input!

You have a great attitude my friend considering the hassles you've faced. I've been wanting to try that Hobbystar motor myself, but have been happy overall with the full BLX200 combo in my Kraton and have been hit recently with big dollar repairs on my real cars...Lol. Part of driving older, payed for vehicles I guess. No more blown head gaskets!!!

what can I say, couldn't help myself!
This bad boy is on the way!
Will report by next weekend!

If you aren't willing to spend time and money on rc cars you are in the wrong hobby my friend, I learned that years ago!
Good luck with the full sized cars, to bad they aren't as much fun to wrench on as 1/8 cars!

Trust me, I spend plenty of time and $$$$ on my RCs, more than the wife probably likes...Lol. Just know when I should chill out on the purchases, be happy with what I've got, and not lose a grip on priorities. Hope that motor works out bro. Definitely let us know how it goes.

Oh I know you do Rich I have seen the collection, I was just making a funny general statement because it is guys like you me and Vanning that know what ot takes to have a nice dialed trucks. I cannot let my wife know what I spend, she would flip!
I think if this motor doesn't work, I will be too embarrased to even report it on here, I would probably just bury it in the garage again for months until I got the itch.
When things don't work I ebay them quick and recoup what I can. When my rc collection gets too big I start to feel guilty. May sell some race stuff since I haven't been to the track in a couple of years, I have two very young boys.....

Yeah it definitely takes time, effort, patience, $$$$, and sometimes frustrating trial and error to get and keep these rigs dialed. My wife and I have separate accounts, thank goodness....Lol.. but I also feel guilty and a bit excessive when the collection of rigs and RC stuff swells. I should eBay a few things myself. Having young kids definitely keeps the priorities in check. I really do hope that motor kicks ass!!! I almost went with the 1730, but Thomas swayed me towards the Nero motor, partially for weight savings when doing bigger airs with harsh flat landings. Still awfully curious though...Lol. Hope you'll report back either way about the 1480 cuz it's good to know info be it good or bad for the rest of us.

I really appreciate you mentioning the Hobbystar stuff because it was totally off my radar, I didn't know there was a motor with the same specks as my leopard, thats exactly what I wanted!
I just hope ot isn't a leopard painted black with a different name on it..... lol
So the nero motor is on your Kraton? What temps and gearing? I was so close to buying one but I like the low kv motors and I don't have any place to jump like you do. May still get one to try out.

The Nero combo definitely has way more torque than the stock BLX185 setup. Trips me out cuz it's only 50 less Kv in a slightly beefier can. I usually get up to 150 motor and 130 ESC on 6s 16 pinion, Backflip tires, but that's running pretty damn hard in 85-105F ambient temps. Top speed is 60+ and borderline nuts in the dirt. Thomas was right, it is an awesome upgrade from stock. The first time I ran it I was shocked at how far I could clear gap jumps with such little run up. Doesn't feel overpowered, but definitely has plenty to do everything I enjoy. Brought my Kraton to life no doubt. That said, still curious about the longer can motors...Lol. Pretty sure the BLX200 ESC is actually a Hobbywing max 8, they look like twins...Lol.

Very interesting, thanks for the input. A lot of chinese esc's look to be rebranded Hobbywings. Probably could have just saved money and gone with a nero motor, part of the learning process I suppose!

Now that I hear Parks issues.....I think we both may have had faulty Leopard motors at one time. If his turns out to be a motor issue. After process of elimination....what can it be ? I've owned 3 Leopard motors and Im sure one was no good. On paper...it should have run well but it got wicked hot super fast. It was time for me to start trying other brands also. I got this Hobbywing in my new rig....Park got me into looking at them rather than Castle. I was able to get this Max8 installed way easier than a Castle. It came with caps, hardware, zip ties, extra fan, program card. It had screw holes under the ESC which is why it installed well, the switch is a better design. I really like this setup. I'll rip this thing for a while to see how it does. So far....fast and cool. Got my fingers crossed. I know its in a lighter RC now than my Kraton. It's so awesome how different all these RC's feel. That's part of the fun for me.

Hobbywing has always treated me well! Fried mu Max8 but that was my fault. Looking forward to running a different make motor with the exact size and kv rating to see the difference. I hope this is the motor of my dreams and I can work on breaking other components for a change!
I just put all the RPM parts on for fun, bumper, a arms, mud guards! I love their products and put them on all my rc's

Rpm kicks ass. Once you get the RPM stuff on there. They get real bullet proof. Hope you get dialed in soon. Nothing like having a reliable rig. May have to piece a Kraton together this winter for myself.

Got the new motor in and big improvement, not a silver bullet but much better. Feels like it makes more torque and runs cooler. Still got it to 190 with 20/50 gearing by the end of a charge. But i have been running really short, full throttle bursts in the back yard. I think Vanning and Rich are running in more open terrain so you are getting air moving over the motor and not putting as much demand on the motor?
I like the motor much more in general, nice in black, 4mm mounting holes, nicer machining on the end bells, better wires with 6.5 mm connectors and $40 less.

Does it plug right into the ESC ? I prefer that. 190 end of run sounds good, drop a few teeth and put a fan on.
While using telemetry, I'm seeing that the temps go up 10 degrees when you stop. (No fan). Then it will climb for a while. I got my hands on these WTF fans. Unreal cooling. I got it so I can easily turn it off. The fans are faster and hardier than the pos fans that come with most stuff.

Ohhhh plug right into the esc, I like that idea,I will do that. I have a nice little fan already that i will use, did you make a little holder fir your fan?

I've rigged up so many different ways to put fans on...whatever works. Your Kraton is looking good !!!

Ran the truck hard with 15/50 amd got up to 160. Gonna put the 17t on now and watch temps. The Leo would get to 200 with that gearing.
Now I have found the New weak link, lipos! The truck is pulling so much juice the lipos are getting very warm and very unbalanced after each run! Some cells were at 3.5 while some dropped to 2.5..........yikes! I am running a lipo alarm but it apparently is just reading voltage as a whole.
Looking into the Futaba telemetry! Would be super cool to monitor right from my hand!!!!!

My buddy runs the Futaba. I Tried it a few times. It's nice. We keep the wire sensor away from the fans direct path. Keep it snug on the motor also. My rig now runs 113 on the motor but it's 4S, 2200kv, 16 tooth and SMC batteries show very low resistance on the charger. But the weight of my rig is lower now. I love having the telemetry on there Park. I'm also glad that I found it very accurate. You will like it.

Your new motor sounds like it's good. The entire rig is getting hooked up nice ! My Kraton ran best once I got the entire system right. It had a long run time while still being fast. Could clear a large gap without lots of effort. Sort of mind boggling. My super heavy 8S rig jumped farther. You wouldn't think it would. It has that zip on tap to really send it. But I keep things way more tame than Rich. I gauge stuff off of what he does. Gives me an idea of what's going to hold up !!!!!

Motor plugs right in toe esc but barely! Looks great tho cleans it up a bit!
Added the hw fan also wanted to get test runs without a fan first.
19/50 gearing now!
Now I hust hope to not have a lipo fire!

Misspellings and double photos! Getting better posting with the phone just have fat fingers lol! ;)
