Is WD40 my friend?

Tri-Flow is uses PTFE, I haven't compared it to any of the RC specific stuff and I haven't had a can of WD-40 since I started using Penetrol as a penetrating oil for rusty stuff on 1:1 cars and trucks.

I decided to try it based on our experience with Tri-Flow and bike chains, it's excellent, and the large uni-ball and Heim joints used in suspension components of 1:1 vehicles. It's very effective at prolonging the life of those joints so I decided to give it a try. Still on the same bearings that I put in 30-40 packs ago and they are still very smooth.
I'll have to give that stuff a try.

I've used WD-40 for years on all my rc's. I'm always running in muddy, wet conditions that require a good garden hosing to clean out all the mud. Always follow up with WD-40 to displace the water and then oil all the bearings. But this thread has got me a little scared now...

If you are using WD40 to clean then oiling them with something else you'll probably be fine. The problems arise when people use it as their sole bearing lubricant.

This engine survived longer than I thought it would. If you've never seen this video it's pretty entertaining.

I use it on everything love it have done for years never any problems and no rust anywhere on the cars

Me too.
Interesting story: https://www.wd40.com/history/

They use it on the SpaceX Starship! Hahaha. Great stuff. The greatest stuff gets discovered by accident.

WD40 is a cleaner/solvent/water absorber that has light oil as a component. It will leave a light film of oil, but it is a light oil that does not do much for lube, and it will evaporate in a few days, leaving the surface un-protected from both oxidation (rust) and friction.
+1
The supposedly remaining Lubricant in WD40 is just Kerosene based and ends up gumming up. It will ruin any BB in a heatbeat. Being a solvent, it breaks down the BB grease. Any type of lube. And I never felt it makes plastic or Nylon parts less brittle. Just an Urban RC myth.
Throw that stuff away. It is marketted so heavily and being cheap also as a do it all snake oil. It is found in 99% of households. Many grab it to "do it all".
Just that it is no more a lubricant than water would be. This crap even stinks to high hell.
Me too.

WD40 markets their brand VERY Hard. That WD40 whole history is complete BS. A lie. And yes Advertising is allowed to lie. Get away with it.
And the many BS YT Life hacks regarding WD40 was conjured up by WD40 Co. to begin with.
1953 was a long time ago. They didn't have a clue back then. Many companies like to embellish their products as "good" for the Aerospace industry.
B.S.
WD Brand "Specialist" series of lubes are in a different category. Still far from ther best out there IMHO. And Still stinks like regular WD40.

The manager at an auto parts store said, WD-40 is fish oil you can cook with it. 💀

It's like 99% of the population still thinks it's lubricant from marketing decades ago.
I wouldn't eat it but at least its safe for the environment - sort of.

"...Gas chromatography is a technique that separates the parts within a mixture be vaporizing them before they decompose. In doing this, it can determine the ingredients of something based on the rates in which each component moves.

In 2009, Wired did just that to WD-40 and they claimed to have found the ingredient list: mineral oil (like baby oil and Vaseline); decane, an alkane often in gasoline that keeps it from freezing; nonane, an alkane that is a water repellant; tridecane and undecane, the same stuff that's found in stink bug scent glands; tetradecane, a(nother) alkane; dimethyl naphthalene, likely a solvent here (there are 10 forms of these isomers); cyclohexane, which would give it a high melting point; and carbon dioxide which propels the stuff from the can so that you can loosen some screws and shine some shoes..."

Add a dash of unobtanium and I think you have a winner.

I cant get around WD-40 or PB Blaster. It makes my throat sore and some times to the point of making sore spots much like strep throat.
Originally I had thought it was due to over exposure, but it sounds like some of you guys wash your hands with this stuff

Whatever's within arm's reach. The only thing I try to avoid is lacquer thinner. that stuff will make your skin look like this in a hurry.

So , nothing of lube for any parts after using ?? 👍🏻
Ive been spraying the wheel bearings with it, then blowing the dirt and wd40 out with compressed Air.
Then soak them in synthetic lubricant.
I can tell when the bearings are filthy dirty. so much nicer when they are clean and oiled.
I also drop oil on them usually each time i go out too.

I Also use a Q-Tip with wd40 on all the steel screw heads after a cleaning or getting wet/damp. Otherwise theres rust everywhere in no time.

I only use WD40 for making plastics look good after clean them.

I actually have silcon spray, but when I spray it, it always get on my floor and make it a ice rink!
