looking to upgrade stock motor.. I’m running 6s with backflip tires, motor is getting hot on 14 tooth pinion. Will try installing fan. I’ve read a good upgrade is the blx200 Nero motor can I run that motor with the stock bkx185 esc? Any help is appreciated on which route to go..

@HunterT, I'd like to do the same thing.

Can the stock v2 Kraton 185 ESC work with the 2000kv Nero motor @Rich Duperbash or @Vanning?

Thanks
Yes, it can. Been using the Nero motor with BLX185 ESC in my Outcast for months. The Nero motor has a bit more torque than the stock BLX185. Realize the connector sizes are different, 4 vs 5.5mm. That said, I can't recommend cutting the motor wires to swap on 4mm connectors. These motor wires are an extension of the armature and shortening them can disrupt the timing and potentially ruin the motor. Best to swap 5.5 connectors onto the BLX 185 ESC.

Hey @Rich Duperbash, thanks for chiming in.

So you're basically saying that the 3 wires from the Nero motor are 5.5mm, but the BLX 185 ESC (receiving ports) are only 4mm?

Do you have a part number that you could recommend?

I'm not positive on the wire sizes, but am with the connectors. My biggest point of caution is don't shorten your motor leads/wires. Any 5.5 Castle or other brand female connector could be soldered onto the BLX185 ESC I believe. Bigger connectors are better anyways.

Yep yep, got those, thanks :)

Merry Christmas ya'll!

I just got the Nero motor installed, and all went mostly well. It was easy peasy.

Had a couple issues. One was that I likely installed the wrong pinion gear (pitch) for the 18T, or I installed it too tight. I really think it has something to do with the pitch of the gear. Broke it on 4S full throttle within 5 min. Not sure what's recommended here. Maybe 64 pitch for 18T pinion @Rich Duperbash?

Also, the 4mm to 5.5mm extensions are kinda weak. I broke the solder on 2 of them after one hard jump.

Overall, I think that 16T on 4S or 6S may be the best overall gearing for this setup. Got more gears on the way!

That is definitely not the right pitch pinion. You can only run Mod 1 pinions with the stock Mod 1 spur gear. 16 on 6s, 18-20 on 4s.

Hi @Rich Duperbash, I see, "Mod1" the key term here. Thanks. No wonder it broke. So could 17T be run on 4S and 6S, or is 16T the limit (for overheating reasons)?
It really depends on your driving style, wheel size/mass, and the surface to some extent. You could definitely go 17 on 6s. I'd just check your temps to be safe. I normally gear my motors to about 150F. For my driving which usually involves hard throttling, 16 is about perfect. 4s is boring for me anyways unless I'm geared taller to get decent top speeds. It's really up to you brother. Best to have a few different size pinions to experiment with.

Hey Rich, I'm on Shockwaves now, but may switch back to Backflips at some point. I'm always hard throttling, mostly in short grass, payment, etc.

Oh yeah, will do! It's really squirrley as is.

By the way, the connectors are giving me issues with current not being consistent. It cuts out and is slow to respond once it gets warmed up. This could be due to just bending one if them from a hard jump. Not sure. But I can literally feel the power running through the motor wires. Never felt them before, so not sure if this is normal.
