Arrma RC's
  1. Granite
I just received my arrma Kraton and I'm stoked. Thing is scary looking just sitting on the shelf waiting for batteries. Well based on forum reading, reviews, YouTube, etc I decided to go with a 5s lipo from rc juice for a happy medium. After reading some conflicting info with some guys saying that the v2 esc could detect/cutoff successfully on its own and others saying it won't and you would have to use an alarm I decided to email customer support at arrma and ask direct. They responded by saying that it could not detect 5s and there was no workaround by using an alarm/nimh mode. So - is he just giving me the "company" response or should I be concerned with trying to run a 5s? Thanks for your help all. Look forward to running this beast!

I think lots of people run 5s? I used to but I wasn't using the stock esc. I am a bit suprised no one has chimed in yet?
If Lipo detection can be turned off? Just do that and run the alarm.
I have a beautiful barely used 5s for sale starting at $40 on fleabay right now. Don't know if that is ok to say here???? Sorry
5s ripps good on these things.

5s works great in a Kraton. I found it to work well with the stock motor and a set of Badlands tires. The problem with running a lipo alarm is keeping it plugged in. I run the Max8 ESC in my new RC and it doesn't detect the 5S. I just turn off the LVC and use an alarm. I built a lipo alarm mount and I'm still developing ways to hold the plug in it. I got something that's working ok....needs improvement.

They are telling you exactly what's also very clearly printed in the user manual. 5s LiPo battery are NOT supported.

Sure you COULD (and some do) run 5S but as Arrma support and the manual has already told you - it's not supported. You can do exactly was @Vanning suggests and turn off the LVC and use a LiPo alarm and so long as you pay attention you shouldn't have any issues. On the flip side if you do run 5S then blow something up don't expect Arrma to cover it... you've been warned. ;)

Didn't intend to upset anyone. Just trying to safely run this new rig with an equal amount of speed and power for me until I feel I'm ready for 6s.

The lipo alarms take some getting use to. Lots of batteries will sound the alarm even after only a few minutes off a fresh full charge. Also....they unplug easy. You have to know when to really shut down and know the alarm is on solid. Or you will puff a pack. It's a pain...I rather use a castle Creations Mamba Monster X ESC on 5S but at the same time...I really do like these Max 8 ESC's.

No no no - not upset at all. That's exactly what we are here for - to learn and share with one another. Keep the questions coming!

Just simply stating it's not suggested nor supported. You CAN run it but it isn't recommended nor supported - that's all.

That said, I personally think 4s is where it's at. 6s is stupid fast and fun don't get me wrong, but it's so much power it makes it terribly easy to blow stuff up, like diffs, tires, so on and so on. For me 4s provides lots of speed with much less worry about breaking stuff. That's just my two cents.

Thanks Vanning! I am finding out real quick that lipo alarms are indeed a pain. Handy, but certainly need to devise a way to get one to stay put. Especially when your bashing with a beast like the mighty Kraton.. the 5s does provide what seems to be a perfect blend, but since I am not in too big a hurry for 6s I may even pick up a 4s pack. Can you recommend an affordable yet powerful 4s pack with plenty of punch? Thx for your help. I'm just an old dude that got the rc bug again this past Christmas after getting my son his first 1/10 scale rc truck. Memories from childhood and the old Tamiya Boomerang came back in an instant! Rc's today are insane in comparison. I'd like to share this hobby with my son, but he's not quite into like I am. It's growing on him though!

That's how it happens !!! RC is burned in our brains from early years. I'm the same way. I've run these cars with lots of combos. A 4S setup is a pleasure to run. It's good because you will more than likely utilize full throttle more often. The ESC's like to be opened up wide. You get plenty of power out of it. Ive been running SMC batteries( from their web page) and I keep my LVC up in the 3.5 volt or high setting. I use like 5200 mah 90C hard case with XT90 connectors.

With more voltage you have to do more work with things. You will find it has way more pop. Sort of like a 2 stroke dirt bike compared to a 4 stroke trail bike. You will see more voltage clears a bigger gap easier when jumping. But !!!!! You can do plenty on 4S and control it easier. It's just less sensitive and still plenty fast.

Yeah, another vote for 4s. The 6s guys for sure jump further, and those backflips are kind of cool. But 4s with the 14t pinion will be nearly as fast, and won't be as uncontrollable for new guys. Plus, every time I use 6s (EVERY TIME), I break something. On 4s, my Kraton and Typhon are 45mph tanks. That is enough for me for bashing.

I see nOOb's to Arrma all the time, buy a new Kraton/Outcast/Typhon, and only run it on 6s, then spend the next month whining at why it breaks when you crash at 60mph, or land on your roof after a 30' jump... I just LOL and shake my head.

Lol. I'm the same way. I run 4s all day long and then I will sometimes put in 6s at the end so that if/when something breaks, I am done for the day and go home and order parts. Overall though I prefer 4s as you have way more control in my opinion.

But doing 30' quintuple backflips is why I bought an Outcast lol.
Even landing on the roof on 4s can do some damage. I bent a driveshaft and at least one of the front two shock shafts on 4s.

But I'm not going to lie I am a terrible driver, in the empty lot next door is a water shutoff valve that sticks about 3-4" out of the ground I have successfully managed to run into it with every one of my rc cars, my Ecx Ruckus I snapped the chassis and broke the servo saver and the first tank after I broke in my Nitro Firestorm I went full throttle smack right into it broke the front chassis, the bulkhead, the shock tower and the servo saver. I even stuck a road cone on top of it and would still manage to run into it.

That said, how are you guys able to run higher tooth pinions than stock, my Outcast gets pretty hot on the 12t, it was at 143* after like 10 minutes, after about 20 minutes the motor is almost too hot to touch, batteries in my temp gun died so I didn't get an accurate reading. Gear mesh is good, I checked for any binding in the drive train and everything seems pretty smooth no binding or anything. I have recently installed the Hobbywing heatsink and fan, to see if that helps, but I have not been able to test it. Still waiting on my servos to arrive.

Fyi, 120-130f is considered "Scalding" so yeah, temp gun. I think I have seen 160 as the upper end, with 180 being the danger zone. With my V1 motor, it always ran about 150f in my Kraton. Now I am running a Nero motor in the Kraton, I don't temp gun it anymore - it is normally barely warm. :) My Typhon has a Trackstar 2350kv motor that like to run about 140 regardless of what I do.

If anyone is interested in seeing how I run my 5S pack with the lipo alarm..... here it is. I have to find the right rubber band for the job. However....a few of these are starting to work. I could move the notches in more. I put one tight zip tie on the balance wires. I know this isn't a Kraton but lots of my stuff comes from all my 1/8th rigs.

I'm rather late to the discussion, but I ran 5S on my v1 Kraton ESC for four years without a hitch. The ESC finally bit the dust (and caught fire) when it got wet while I was driving the car in the snow a few weeks ago. ESCs aside, I've found 5S to be a nice combo of power and run time. However, the same can be accomplished with a 6S battery by simply limiting full throttle in the transmitter or ESC programming.
