Kraton Best heat sink fan for stock motor

The fan on the Powerhobby is far to small to be of any use, think about how much cfm that fan can move, effectively zero, only just better than the Castle Creations which is made of plastic and will make you motor run hotter. As far as plug n play (sort of) HSF go on the Kraton, the Hobbywing C4 is the best bet, it's cheap, has a fair amount of metal heatsink and the fan is a decent size 50mm.

Well that just made up my mind lol. Is it true you have to use something to squeeze the fan on around the motor?

You really need to take the motor off to properly fit the Hobbywing as is, or you can modify it and cut some of the metal off the heatsink and then it will fit onto the motor without removal. The modified HSF will be effective as there is still a large amount of the heatsink metal contacting the motor, but ultimately removing the motor to fit is better. I also used heatsink tape because the motor ribs create an air gap between the two surfaces.

Obviously use what ever fan works best for you. The power hobby works awsome for me.No mods,no motor removal and keeps it about 15 degrees cooler. Fan works great cause there vent hole on the bottom of the fan unlike the hobby wing. Always funny when someone makes a comment about a product they've never used. Theres one on every forum.

Ive read that after you have the motor out and the fan on the motor you'll want to clamp it down with a vise or Chanel locks to give it a snug fit.

I'm liking the power hobby one cuz there is no need to remove the motor but where I live it gets hot out during the summer so max airflow would be best lol.

Yeah you will need to manipulate the Heatsink for a perfect fit on the Kraton motor, easy to do just fiddly, i also used some conductive tape which helps hold the heatsink in place and transfer heat better, but bigger metal, bigger surface area bigger fan, more cfm equals more cooling, up to you whether you think it is worth the effort.

My only concern going into this is getting the spur mesh back to where it was. I've never messed with spur meshes before but I've read up on it and there is a YouTube video lol.

I'm going to go with hobbywing c4. What was the tape you used and where can I get it lol?

Just get the tape on ebay, a couple dollars, search for thermal conductive adhesive tape lol, the tape is not a permanent bond so can be easily removed if needed.

Will I need a led extension? I sure hope not cuz I already bought the fan and the tape from amazon lol.

Hi, most easy fix is to put a splitter on your esc where the esc fan is connected.
And put a heatsink cooling pad between the motor and fan. It increases the heat transfer and you don't have to bend the heatsink!

It showed up yesterday. I bent it closed so there was just enough room for the motor to slip in. Then I put the heat sink cooling tape on the motor and shoved the motor in. My only concern is when the motor gets hot, won't it heat up the heat sink tape and make it pliable witch would allow the heat sink to move upon hard impact? Lol not the best driver lol. Or is it light enough that the bond between the tape and heat sink would hold it in place? Hope all that made sense lol

I use the castle fan, have had trouble with wires breaking at soldering, but this time I applied a little shoe goo over wire ends to help strengthen there and is holding up a bit longer. Also carry temp gun an use regularly,as if it were life an death.:chicken:

Yeah Racing does a great twin fan....
Part No Ya-0261 in blue or black. I fitted this to my Kraton with a Castle Creations 2200kv motor and works really well. It takes a bit of effort to install as it is in 2 pieces but I have used this on other cars as well and are well made and reliable.

So how big is the Stock Kraton Motor? the HOBBY wing mount is 44mm and the Yeah Racing set up is 40.8 mm. Not that I mind bending the larger version, but I would like to use the heat conductive tape. That makes the circumference larger, and with the YEAH RACING version, the heat sink wraps all the way around the can.

Also, is there such thing as a spliter or "Y" for the connectors? So I can plug in the motor fan and the ESC fan into the same port? I don't even know what that type of plug is called.

Unfortunately I am away working for a month and not able to measure anything.
If you go onto the castle creations website and have a look at the 2200kv brushless motor dimensions and also the yeah racing website for the 2 piece twin cooling fan as mentioned in my previous post you will be able to compare. When I get back home I will post some photos to show what it looks like on my Kraton and my Mt4. I believe the 40.8 is the minimum circumference required but because it is a 2 piece it is adaptable to suit even motors that already have small fins on the casing like the original Kraton red motor, the skyrc motors and the likes of the new leopard motors that are slightly larger. The yeah racing kit supplies a number of screws and you can also use longer ones to allow it the wrap around the motor casing. That is the beauty of the 2 piece heatsink. I hope this is of some assistance and will post picture soon. Cheers

You have to do some soldering to bring the 2 fan wires to one and change the plug to suit your receiver or get an adaptor which may be available from Hobbyking or another online rc website.
Thx

Right on @cuzzy !! I'm gonna grab the Yeah Racing next payday. The other one is cheaper, but the 2 piece mount compels me. Anf the dual fan thing lokks sweet!

You won't be disappointed.....
You can get them from Rc Mart or A Main Hobbies....Cheers

I struggled to use conductive tape with my Hobbywing C4 heatsink.

I took the motor out and tried to slip the heatsink and tape over the motor but the tape kept getting caught on the bolts protruding from the motor can. I also wasn't confident in the tack offered by the conductive tape.

Solution: Ditch the tape, remove the fan and (carefully!) lean on the sides of the heatsink to reduce its circumference. It now grips the motor tightly. It was a struggle to slip over the motor but it definitely won't move around now. The only thing that was a PITA was that I had to bend the end of one of the cotter pins that hold the main braces into the roll cage. Easy, just a PITA.

Re: Power source for the fan... I've never fitted an additional fan to cool a motor before, but I understood that the fan needs to get it's power from the receiver? On this basis, mine's plugged into the 'B' (bind/batt) port of my receiver.

Not sure if it's a good idea to tap into the ESC fan and take power from the ESC? Can the ESCs fan port handle the additional load?
